Dundee Rep is committed to producing world class theatre of the highest quality.
We seek to produce diverse and far reaching work and see new writing as an essential ingredient to complement our programme of classic and contemporary world drama, musicals and plays for children and young people. We aim to produce a programme of work that is exciting, challenging and relevant to our audiences and believe that new plays are essential to the progress and wellbeing of contemporary theatre; they examine and reflect the world we live in and sharpen our engagement with new ideas and world events.
We hope to inspire the writers that work with us to be courageous, passionate and theatrically ambitious for our theatre space and for our Ensemble.
In order for us to utilise our resources and to support writers in the best ways possible, Dundee Rep does not accept unsolicited scripts. We are however, interested in writers contacting us and to submit their work to us on an invitation basis only. Any unsolicited scripts sent in will be returned (if an SAE is enclosed) or will be disposed of.
Our aim is to produce the best work for our audiences. We do not want to make promises where they cannot be delivered and so in developing a dialogue between the Rep and the writer we hope to deliver a more honest, more sustainable and more satisfying relationship for both parties.
If you have an unsolicited script you would like to send to a theatre because you are looking for production or for feedback, we recommend you contact the following organisations:
Playwright’s Studio Scotland
The Traverse Theatre
National Theatre of Scotland
New Writing North
Paines Plough
Hampstead Theatre
The Bush
The Royal Court
Soho Theatre
Writers Net
Once you have read this and feel you would still like get in touch, in the first instance, please email Associate Director, Jemima Levick.
In this first email you should include some information about your experience as a writer (no more than 2 A4 pages), and what script you think would be of interest to us and why. If we are interested, we will contact you to invite submission, or will begin a dialogue about your other work that might be of interest to us.
It is important to reiterate that this is only the beginning of a long relationship. We can only enter into correspondence with writers whose work is of interest, we feel we can contribute constructively to their work and we would like to develop a relationship.
Ultimately, whether or not we like a play will always come down to ‘taste’ but we are looking for writers that;
- Are passionate about what they have written
- Are rigorous about their work and want to push their craft to be the best it can be
- Write for the theatre because of its unique power as an art form
- Are original and ambitious with their work
- Want to engage with Rep audiences on a local, national and international level
We encourage (but are not exclusive about) writers who are Scottish or are based in Scotland and are from under represented backgrounds
