Written in 1938, Les Parents Terribles tells the story of Yvonne, a neurotic mother who has an overly-possessive relationship with her son, Michael. Her world begins to fall apart when Michael attempts to flee the disordered, bohemian nest into the cool, clean air of his girlfriend’s organised life. A girlfriend who, unbeknown to either mother or son, is also the mistress of Michael’s father. It may sound like an episode of Eastenders, but Les Parents Terribles is a slick and stylish interpretation of Jean Cocteau’s farcical play.
